SILIGURI
Siliguri is situated at the foothills of eastern Himalayas,
landscaped by the lush tea gardens of Dooars. The biggest town in
North Bengal, Siliguri is the gateway to Darjeeling, Sikkim,
Bhutan, Kalimpong, eastern Nepal and Assam. Tourists also use
Siliguri as base to visit the Mahananda Wild Life Sanctuary, the
rain forests of Dooars, Jaldapara and Gorumara sanctuaries famous
for its one-horned rhinoceros, Buxa Tiger Reserve, Mirik hill
resort and of course, the tea plantations, world renowned for
Darjeeling Tea ('The Champagne of Tea').
Siliguri is 392 feet above sea level and has summer temperature of
32 degrees celsius. The junction is good for visit round the year
excepting the monsoon, i.e., July and August. The activity of
highest elevance to be noticed here is the tea trade and the
auctions that takes place. Siliguri, the gateway to North Eastern
India was only a small hamlet at the beginning of this century. .
In 1995 it has crossed half a Million mark and expected to cross a
million by the turn of the century. It is situated in the
so-called chicken's neck of the north-eastern India is the vital
connecting link with the rest of the country.
Geographically the location of Siliguri is unique in that by only
half hour's drive one will reach the centre of dense forest or
start climbing the hills. Meandering roads to Kalimpong or Gangtok
running parallel to the River Teesta or Rangit with its rapids and
falls is one of the finest stretch of landscape in the world.
Cluster of hill stations around Siliguri will make any country
proud. Once you leave the plains and start climbing, you enter a
different domain altogether. Brilliant red rhododendrons, charming
white magnolias and majestic pines welcome you to Darjeeling. The
slopes gently flow down in waves and waves of green tea bushes.
All around you are the gushing streams, gurgling gorges and tiny
lakes, which reflect the turquoise of the sky giving intoxicating
experiences... to be cherished forever.
Siliguri has some architectural wonders which successfully attract
many. One such architectural delight with equal religious value is
the Isckon temple situated at the eastern corner of Siliguri town
and because of its American connections and symbol of a Hindu cult
it is a pleasure to visit this sprawling temple that was
inaugurated in 2002.
