GOA - TOURIST PARADISE
Goa is best known as a tourist paradise, both in India and abroad. Lavishly gifted by nature for its scenic beauty, virgin beaches girdling its 105-km long palm-fringed coast interspersed with enchanting coves, bays and estuaries, paddy fields, shady coconut, cashew and mango groves dotted with tiny picturesque villages, temples and churches renowned for worship and pilgrims, forts and monuments and above all, friendly and hospitable people, Goa presents an ideal tourism profile.
Goa is bounded on the north by Sindhudurg district of Maharastra state, on the East by Belgaum district of Karnataka state, on the South by Karwar district of Karnataka state and on the West by the Arabian Sea. "The beaches" is what Goa is all about. Goa possesses one of the finest stretches of sandy coastline in India . The tropical climate, the coconut trees, the white sand beaches all have been immortalized in many song and dance sequences of Indian movies and add to the romantic allure of
Goa. It is now the No. 1 tourist destination of Indians on the move especially the newly weds on their honeymoon and the upwardly mobile Indian gentry. Goa attracts almost 12% of total foreign tourists arriving in India.
Goa's monuments like those elsewhere tell the story of Goa's 1000 year history. A lot of them have been built by the erstwhile Portuguese regime and are remnants of a colonial past. Goa is the land of St. Francis Xavier, who is known as Goa's Patron Saint or
"Goencho Saib”; his sacred relics are immortalized at the Basilica of Bom Jesus in Old
Goa.
Today at the dawn of the "age of Information Technology", as Goa enters the new Millennium, the 25th state of India has plenty to write about in terms of achievements, some examples being- the highest per capita income in India, the highest per personal savings rate in India, the lowest infant mortality rate in India, one of the highest literacy rate in India and one of the highest standards of living as compared to the rest of India.
India is a country with traditional hospitality at heart and Goa has become the symbol of excellence in hospitality and service. The hospitality education at IIAS Goa is a manifestation of these standards.
